Event Details
In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness month, the NY LGBT Network is hosting a special forum to bring together healthcare, human service, domestic violence, behavioral health, legal, and other community providers to strengthen the response to intimate partner violence within LGBTQ communities. Through collaboration, shared learning, resource exchange, and relationship building, this forum aims to help providers better understand the unique barriers LGBTQ survivors may face, strengthen referral pathways, identify gaps in services, and build a more coordinated and affirming network of support across Long Island.
When IPV Doesn’t Fit the Stereotype
When intimate partner violence occurs in LGBTQ relationships, the person experiencing abuse may not fit traditional expectations based on gender, appearance, physical size, or relationship roles. This interactive conversation will explore how bias can shape the way providers identify and respond to harm. Through discussion and real-world scenarios, participants will examine how survivors can be overlooked, misunderstood, or even misidentified as the aggressor, and consider ways to build a more informed, affirming, and effective response.
We invite you to join the conversation, share your experience and resources, and connect with other providers working to better support LGBTQ+ survivors across Long Island.
